(Monday, July 31 – Wednesday, August 2, 2023) – A fun summer getaway to the Duluth/North Shore area was the perfect tonic for Papa and Nana. Over the three-day adventure, we went on a harbor cruise, drove up the North Shore to Gooseberry Falls, to Black Beach near Silver Bay, Iona’s Beach, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, and took a train ride on the Zephyr RR through Duluth.

Black Beach was created by the local mining company’s taconite tailings that had been dumped into Lake Superior over the years. It used to be off limits to the public but so many folks snuck in that they opened it to the public.

Iona’s Beach has “singing stones” when waves wash up along the shore. We didn’t notice that so much, but there were plenty of pink colored potatoe sized rocks that made up the beach

We were able to watch the Atlantic Huron leave the Duluth harbor, and it was quite a spectacle!
Our Duluth/North Shore adventure wouldn’t be complete without a meal at one of our all time favorites that we can’t get where we live – Sammy’s Pizza. The cheesy garlic bread and pizza didn’t disappoint and capped off a fun summer adventure!
