(Saturday, June 4, 2011) – Blessed with a picture-perfect Saturday, for whatever outdoor activity you might have in mind, we headed out for a wonderful fishing adventure on Mille Lacs Lake! The temperature was perfect, in the 70’s, and sunny with just a slight breeze (kept the bugs away). Linda and I joined a group from work on a fishing launch adventure, and enjoyed the wonderful weather and visiting, complete with grilled brats on the boat!

According to the captain, when the weather is good for people, the “catching” is not very good & when the weather is not so good, then the fishing usually turns into “catching” – as in walleyes! He was correct on this day, as the launch boat was near capacity, with about 24 people, and maybe 5 or 6 fish were caught over the four hour fishing adventure. Luckily, our party fared pretty well, with a few nice fish!
Mark and Fran both caught nice sized walleyes, and Mike was the big winner – catching the biggest fish of the day!
After the awesome fishing adventure, Flowergirl and I decided to go on a walk at a nearby state park, and we soon found ourselves in for quite a surprise! We began putting on some bug spray in the parking lot, preparing for a nice walk along the lake, when we heard a continuous low pitched drone noise down near the water. We soon discovered that there had been a recent hatch of “crane flys”, and they were everywhere! So many were flying around, that the constant unknown noise, became known – it was the sound of all the flys wings!
We decided to try for an evening walk on one of the interior trails, away from the Lake (and crane flys); and soon discovered that we were subject to an avalanche of “army worms” that were spinning down from the leaves of trees! Next up was a quick run back to the parking lot as we had our fill of the great outdoors for this wonderful Saturday!
